Mind Your Own Business

“People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.” “That’s the pot calling the kettle black.” “Let he who is free from sin cast the first stone.” You’ve heard them before, and no doubt many others that are far less polite.

I am guilty of often worrying about people around me and watching the way they are living their life. Done at the expense of spending the time making sure I have all my own ducks in a row. And it is a trap you can fall into all too easily.

Much like many other things in life, such as giving feedback versus receiving feedback, doing the dumping as apposed to being dumped etc, it is far easier to criticise someone else and the way they live as apposed to critiquing your own way of life.

Sometimes you mask this as ‘caring for them’. It is a nice way to make yourself feel ok about sticking your nose in their business. But it is not always good enough to alleviate the annoyance you are causing.

I have realised recently that unless their actions are having a seriously adverse effect on your life, it is best to let them run their course. Let people make their own mistakes and live out their own journey. We are all very different and as such, make decisions that may not seem right to others.

This mantra holds true to changing people also. Waste less energy on trying to better people or make them change to something you like more. Spend that time and energy on bettering yourself. If you are already perfect, then spend your spare time working with the underprivileged.

Imaging how much better people we would be if we spent more time fixing ourselves and less time trying to fix others.
