Sometimes we get thrown a bit of a curly question. We get caught a bit short and the easy option is to tell a bit of a story to get out of a bind. At the time you think that you will be able to cover it up and no one will know.
But the problem is, you forget that you told the lie and at some point in the future, you get caught out. Maybe not right there and then, maybe not tomorrow, but chances are you are going to get caught out eventually and will look far more stupid.
So the best policy is to just be honest from the start.
Sadly, it seems to be a slippery slope once you start telling fibs. You need to tell more to cover for the last one and next thing you know you start to live in a world that is somewhere between reality and fiction. It becomes habitual and you don’t even know you are doing it any more.
The sad part of it all is that you start lying about things that don’t even matter. Things that are inconsequential but you have talked yourself into believing that people care. Once you get to this point, people just don’t trust you any more. Even when you are telling the truth, people begin to doubt you.
Now, we all tell little lies sometimes. And I don’t think we want to find ourselves in a world like the Jim Carey movie ‘Liar Liar’. Being completely honest with each other and hurting peoples feelings.
But telling lies does more damage to us than it does others. It devalues the times when we are telling the truth and creates a sense of distrust from those who surround us.
It may seem like the harder road at the time, but telling the truth up front truly is the best policy.
